With the abundance of information available to us today, it's important to seek out reliable answers to your porcelain veneers questions. The best way to do so is to arrange a consultation with the experienced dentists at our Crystal Lake cosmetic dentistry practice. After discussing your goals, our dentists can tell you all about veneers. In the meantime, please browse the most common FAQs below.
Am I a Good Candidate for Veneers?
These dental prosthetics rejuvenate your smile by concealing a wide array of cosmetic imperfections, such as:
- Stains and yellowing
- Worn enamel
- Irregular size, shape or length
- Gaps between teeth
You are likely a good candidate if you have one or more tooth flaws you want to conceal, and if your teeth and gums are generally healthy. If you have issues with gum inflammation, gum disease or tooth decay, it would need to be treated before placing veneers. A habit of teeth grinding (also called bruxism) may need to be addressed, if it's present. Grinding can crack veneers, so our dentists may suggest a mouth guard or stress reduction if you grind or gnash regularly.
How Much Do Veneers Cost?
Cost is variable. It depends on how many veneers are placed and whether other treatments are performed in conjunction. Once our dentists have met you in a consultation and recommend a course of treatment, our front office staff will provide you with a cost estimate. We'll also present your payment options, and explain how you can apply for financing through CareCredit, if that interests you.
Is the Process Painful?
No, it's not painful. Like any dental procedure, different patients have different tolerance levels. You'll probably feel pressure when the dentist gently roughens the surface of the tooth (so that the veneer will "stick" to it). You may feel pressure when the dentist attaches the veneer. But most people tolerate the process quite well. The great thing about it is that it's completed relatively quickly. It takes only a few appointments at our office to get final results.
What's the Procedure Like?
As mentioned, the teeth are gently abraded so that they have a rougher surface for the veneer to adhere to. Once your final veneers have been sent to us by the lab, they'll be bonded to the surface of the teeth. You'll walk out of our door with your new smile ready to shine!
How Long Will They Last?
Veneers can last for decades without needing to be replaced. It really depends on the care and caution you exhibit. Good dental hygiene and avoidance of bad habits (such as tearing packages open with your teeth) will prevent stains, cracks and chips – the main reasons veneers require replacement.
Are They Worth It?
Of course we can't say for sure because every person is different, but our patients love their veneered smiles! Check out our reviews and the gallery to get an idea of the results possible. Porcelain veneers create the smile of your dreams, and it's lasting. For most people, that makes them worth it.
